Malaria has plagued humanity for centuries, claiming countless lives since ancient times. Despite its devastating impact, an effective treatment remained elusive until the mid-17th century. The breakthrough came not through modern laboratories but through the keen observations of Jesuit missionaries in Peru, and the surprising tale of a lost man in the jungle.

According to legend, an Indigenous man suffering from a severe malarial fever became lost in the dense Peruvian rainforest. Weakened and disoriented, he collapsed beside a pond. Driven by thirst, he drank from the water, despite its unusually bitter taste. He suspected the fallen bark or leaves of a nearby tree might poison it, possibly. Yet, rather than worsening, his condition improved. His fever subsided, and his strength began to return.

The tree that had leached into the pond was none other than the cinchona tree, later known for its powerful medicinal compound, quinine. Upon returning to his village and making a full recovery, the man shared his story of the bitter-tasting water and its miraculous effects.

Intrigued by these local accounts, Jesuit missionaries investigated the properties of the tree. They began brewing a tea from its bark, using it to treat malaria with remarkable success. This marked the beginning of quinine’s use as a therapeutic agent a discovery that would save millions of lives across the globe and become the foundation of anti-malarial medicine for centuries to come.

The Bible also speaks of another tree with healing powers: the tree of life.

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”

Rev 22:1-2
