In 1921, a small group of British soldiers guarding the Sinai Peninsula became lost in the heavy sands whipped up by desert winds. Unfortunately, they found themselves without water to drink. Realizing that they were in imminent danger of dying from thirst, they decided to dig in the sand, believing they could reach water beneath the surface.
When their efforts seemed fruitless, one of the soldiers suddenly recalled the story of the nation of Israel from the book of Numbers 20. In that story, Moses struck a rock in the wilderness, and God provided the children of Israel with water. He reminded his companions that they were in the wilderness of Rephidim, which was similar to Sinai. He then pointed to a nearby rock and suggested, “Why don’t we try to find water in that rock, just as Moses did?”
The men were desperate enough to try anything. However, he forced them to approach the rock. After praying, they began to break the rock using a pick. To their great surprise, a miracle occurred a stream of pure water started flowing from the rock in the desert. The rock was smooth, and part of it concealed a hidden spring. This flowing water captivated the people until they were rescued by their companions.
Have you ever wondered whether God still answers prayers today?
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
John 15:7
