The Amazing Logo on the National Flag

Story of Transformation October 17, 2025

The Dominican Republic is one of the 13 countries comprising the Caribbean Islands. Its capital city is Santo Domingo, and it is located on the North American continent. The country shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

The Dominican Republic has a rich and inspiring history, which is beautifully represented in its national flag.

When the country gained independence from Haiti in 1844, its revolutionary leader, Juan Pablo Duarte, designed a flag filled with symbols of faith, freedom, and patriotism. Duarte was a deeply religious man who wanted his nation to follow the principles of belief in God, liberty, and truth. Because of this, he decided to include an open Bible as part of the national emblem.

The open Bible symbolizes the Christian foundation of the Dominican Republic. It represents the country’s love for God, truth, and freedom. The words shown in the Bible come from the Gospel of John, chapter 8, verse 32, which says:

“Y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres.”
(“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”)

This verse teaches that truth is a powerful value that helps people live with honesty and integrity. The Bible encourages everyone to seek truth—not just as knowledge, but as a way of living that connects us with God.

Many people search for happiness in wealth, power, or pleasure, but Jesus taught that true freedom comes only through knowing the truth. When He spoke to the people in Jerusalem, He clearly said:

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free”
