Alexander Selkirk was no stranger to danger. He was a fierce, quick-tempered man. In 1703, Selkirk joined famed explorer William Dampier on a perilous expedition through the Pacific, raiding Spanish ships. But when doubts arose about the safety of their ship, Selkirk’s fiery temper got the best of him. After a heated dispute with the captain, he demanded to be left ashore on the remote, uninhabited island of Juan Fernández, 400 miles off the coast of Chile.
At first, it seemed like an act of reckless pride. But pride quickly gave way to fear. When no one else joined him, Selkirk pleaded to return to the ship. The captain refused. And so, with nothing but a few supplies and his Bible, Selkirk watched the only boat in sight disappear into the horizon. What began as a few days of solitude turned into four long, silent years.
The early days were filled with fear and despair. The nights were haunted by howling animals, crashing storms, and swarms of rats that gnawed at his feet. Hungry, lonely, and heartbroken, Selkirk even considered ending his life. But God was not finished with him.
Little by little, the castaway began to change. He built a shelter. He hunted wild goats for food. He tamed feral cats to fight the rats. And he turned to the only true companion he had left—his Creator. Singing hymns, praying aloud, and reading his Bible daily, Selkirk found strength that no ship could bring. In his own words, he became a better Christian on that island than ever before.
In 1709, rescue finally came. But with it came shocking news: the very ship he had left behind had sunk not long after, claiming the lives of many crewmates. The others had been captured by the Spanish. What had seemed like a tragedy had, in truth, saved his life.
There is many Selkirk in all of us.
When storms hit on us, when family turns distant, when friends abandon us—we may feel cast away on our own lonely island. But even there, we are never truly alone. There is a Companion who sees, hears, and walks with us through the silence. When the world turns its back, Jesus extends His hand.
As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you..… Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:5,9
